Cucamonga Peak is the Eastern most peak on the San Gabriel Range. Standing at 8856 feet, it is a massive figure on the backdrop of the Inland Empire. This article will discuss reaching the peak from Ice House Canyon from Mt. Baldy Village. For a detailed description on Ice House Canyon and reaching Ice House Saddle please take a look the Ice House Canyon article.

This hike should be attempted sometime in the Summer or Fall before the first snow fall. A good portion of the trail is shielded from the sun and snow and ice could be a problem into late spring. The trail to the peak is narrow and steep in places and it is best to avoid snow and ice, especially if you are with your pup.

Once you reach Ice House Saddle, you will be faced with a number of different trails. If you turn to the left you can proceed to Timber Mountain and the Three T's. If you turn right you can continue to Kelly Camp and Ontario Peak. If you continue straight you will journey to Lytle Creek. The path to Cucamonga Peak is to the right of the Middle Fork Trail. You will notice you are climbing up hill. If you are travelling downhill, then you are most likely on the Middle Fork Trail. From the saddle it is around 2 and a half miles to the peak. So make sure you are prepared to continue. If you or your dog are showing signs of fatigue, now would be a good time to turn back.

The next 2 miles all take place above 7000 feet on steep and narrow trails. Be prepared! Be sure you have enough water for you and your dog. Be prepared to deal with the gusts that whip through the canyons. Be sure to check the forecast to make sure there are no weather advisories. And have some food to replenish you and your dogs energy for the return journey.

The beginning of your journey from Ice House Saddle will take you around the slopes of Bighorn Peak. As you wind around the slopes you will eventually reach Cucamonga Saddle. From here you will begin your ascent up to Cucamonga Peak. The switchbacks will help you climb the peak and you will gain elevation rapidly.

As you ascend, be sure to enjoy the views. Although challenging, this is a very enjoyable trail with many sights to see along the way.

Be sure to bring enough water for your pup. The climbing will present quite a challenge for your furry friend. This is not a good hike if your dog is not in good shape. Be sure to take them up to Ice House Saddle and maybe up to Timber Mountain a few times before you embark on this journey. If your dog is in good condition they should really enjoy this journey. But the last thing you want to do is to have to carry a dog downhill for six miles. There were a couple other dogs that Hunter encountered on the Peak, but I would reserve this trip for only the well-conditioned trail dogs.

When you reach this sign (the sign has seen better days) continue up the trail to Cucamonga Peak. You are almost there! You are litterally just feet away. Just continue going up toward the peak and not past this sign on what looks like another trail.

Once you are on the peak, you will notice that there is a lot of flat ground. The official peak and high point are just beyond, but be sure to explore the whole surrounding area. You will be treated to some great views and a number of cool conifers. There are also a large number of lizards and birds to see. Just watch for ants.

The views from the Peak are spectacular. On a clear day you may be able to make out the silohuettes of Downtown Los Angeles. Plan to spend extra time on the peak to enjoy the views that range for miles and miles. The views make this hike extra rewarding. These views may be even more rewarding than a hike up Mt. Baldy or hiking the Three T's. It's also fun to take the time to see if you can recognize any landmarks from 8800 feet!

I suggest you spent at least an hour to rest, rehydrate and have a snack on the peak before you return journey. The trek downhill can put some strain on your knees. Return the way you came feeling accomplished. Every time you travel through the Inland Empire you can look up at the peak and remind yourself that you made it up there!
I felt like Sunset Peak was a good spot to get some views so I headed up Mt. Baldy Road. I didn't want to deal with snow and ice on other peaks, since Sunset Peak is around 5700 feet elevation I figured I wouldn't have to deal with as much snow. This turned out to be true, as only some remnants of the storm remained in the shady parts of the fire road. I wish I could have made it up earlier in the week, I bet the views the day after the storm were brilliant. Anyway, here are some pictures from today and hopefully I'll have a full write-up by the end of the weekend.
The rain and snow kept Hunter and I indoors through the weekend. It is very nice to see the snow capped peaks out the window, and I am especially glad that we received some much needed rain. This most likely will postpone any early season peak bagging until the summer, but I'm quite fine with that. So stick to some lower elevation hiking for now, or take a drive into the San Gabriels to catch a glimpse of some snow. ABC 7 reported Mt. Baldy received over 18" of snow. Check out the Mt. Baldy Webcam. Enjoy the views.Tayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09238759902906473011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5644220300941490973.post-54689943646201266532012-03-14T13:03:00.002-07:002012-03-14T13:03:52.397-07:00Timber Mountain via Ice House Canyon

Timber Mountain is located just 0.9 miles from Ice House Saddle. Take the popular Ice House Canyon trail to the saddle and continue from there. This write-up will only cover the Timber Mountain portion of the journey. Once you reach the saddle, you will face many choices. To the South you can hike to Ontario Peak while passing Kelly Camp and Bighorn Peak. To the East you can take the Middle Fork Trail to Lytle Creek or head up to the summit of Cucamonga Peak. And, to the North you can hit the Three T's of Timber, Telegraph, and Thunder. Most of these hikes are very involved and may best be considered as backpacking trips with overnight stays. Today, we will just conquer Timber Mountain.
The ascent to Timber Mountain will cover 700 feet of elevation gain in 0.9 miles. It is a solid hike for you and your dog and when you reach the summit you with feel accomplished.

The hike to Timber Mountain can take place from late spring into fall. This year we had very little precipitation so I was able to make it up at the beginning of March. It is best for you and your dog to wait until later in spring and into summer to attempt to reach any peaks. Snow can make it hard to follow trails, and it can slow you down and causes you and your dog to work harder. In my experience though, Timber Mountain is usually the first peak to be accessible because most of the trail gets direct sunlight, keeping snow off the switchbacks.
The trail to the summit is short and straightforward. It is easy to follow and is just challenging enough to get your blood pumping. You get some cool views on the way to the summit so take some breaks for pictures. If you want to hike any peaks but you don't know where to begin, I would recommend this as a good practice/training hike. The other peaks are more difficult, but this will give you an idea what you and your dog are capable of.

When you travel almost 3/4 of a mile from the saddle along the Three Tee's Trail, you will see a sign guiding you to Timber Mountain. Take a right and head up the final 1/4 mile to the summit. This is quite a little trek, and it can be quite difficult if there is still snow on the trail. There is no clear trail, but it is obvious where you need to go. Just continue your ascent straight up the mountain.

We made the first footprints in the snow

So is this a good dog hike? Well, yes. Ice House Canyon is a great dog hike and the extra 0.9 miles to Timber Mountain are quite rewarding. If you get to the saddle and you think your pup still has some gas left in the tank, then go for it. Just know that if your dog hasn't hiked a lot or if they have a lot of weight to carry, the climb may be a little too much for them. Dogs need conditioning too, so if you intend to hike any of the surrounding peaks it may be a good idea to have a couple trips to the saddle and back before you continue on. Dogs are known the continue on just to please their owner, so be sure to stop and see how they are doing now and then. There also are stories of dogs that give up and refuse to continue on and the last thing you want to have to do is carry a dog for 4 miles back to your car.
Also, take snow into consideration (you will most likely encounter snow here from November - April). Your dog may enjoy the snow, but make sure your dog's paws are doing okay. Take breaks and check their pads and clean out any snow or ice that can cause irritation. Some dog's pads are more sensitive than others so keep an eye on them. You can avoid some problems by keeping your pup's nails trimmed and by keeping the hair in-between their pads groomed and trimmed. If your dog's paws are sensitive, it may be a good idea to invest in some dog boots.
Ice House Canyon is a busy trail, so I have to prepare you by saying that you may encounter other dogs and many people along the way. This is always something to be aware of if you pup doesn't interact well with strange dogs.
It's couple years old, but all this information is good. It covers everything from planning a trip to buying clothing for your dog. Its a well-organized and brief article. Definitely a good read.
Bear Canyon trail is a nice hike along a small creek that will lead you to some stunning views of the surrounding peaks and the city below. The best part about this hike is the relatively low traffic compared to Ice House Canyon and other popular area trails.
Bear Canyon Trail is located in the middle of Mt. Baldy Village. It is a great trail that can take you to Bear Ridge or even Mt. San Antonio. You will be treated to some great views of the surrounding peaks and even get a bird's-eye view of Mt. Baldy Village along the way.

Before you trek down the trail, make sure you take the time to check out Old Glory. Old Glory is the oldest and largest Bigcone Douglas Fir in Existence. It is said to be 600-700 years old, 91 inches in diameter, and 173 feet tall. Check out this entry for Bigcone Douglas Fir from the Forest Service.

This is a great small hike, but it can turn into a 6 mile trek to Mt. San Antonio. The hike to Bear Flat is still a formidible journey, with 1200 feet of elevation gain in 1.6 miles (depending on where you begin your hike). So don't be fooled by the short distance of this hike, it still can present a great workout for you and your dog. I would rate the hike as moderate difficulty.
The hike begins on Bear Canyon drive. On your walk up the road to the trailhead, you will encounter a number of beautiful cabins much like Ice House Canyon. Anytime from Spring to Fall will work for this hike depending on weather and snow fall. In a year like this, there will be no snow on the ground even during winter. So as always, check weather and conditions before you embark on your journey.
After passing by a number of cabins on Bear Canyon Road, you will eventually reach the trail. There will be plenty to see along the trail. You will be under the shade of large conifers including Bigcone Douglas Firs and Incense Cedars. When you're not under the big conifers, you will be shaded by oaks where you will even catch some ferns growing under the shade. You will also encounter a portion of chaparral with Manzanita and Yucca. The shaded areas will make for an enjoyable hike and the sun-lit areas are not numerous enough to make the hike unbearable.
The trail is clear along the way, but there are not a lot of signs. I didn't spot a mile marker on the way up. The trail is rather steep and in some spots it is really narrow. There really are no dangerous spots, but be sure to concentrate on the way up and down because there are some potentially slippery spots. Also, be prepared for a lot of switchbacks. Despite the short distance, be prepared for some work on the way up to the flat. Keep an eye out for a few more cabins up here as well. The cabins up her are built in some crazy places and it's amazing to think about the engineering and transport of materials to these remote areas.
One of the few signs you will see along the trail is a Mt. Baldy Trail sign pointing to the right. I suggest that you follow the sign. You are able to travel straight and you will reach the creek. Once you reach the creek you will be greeted by a bridge made of fallen tree parts. After the bridges you will see a set of steep steps carved into the rock. The steps are really steep and they don't seem like a good idea for a dog hike. So follow the sign and turn right on Mt. Baldy Trail.
So what does the pup think? There is plenty for you and your dog to see along this short hike. I enjoyed the variety along the trail. There are some opportunities for your dog to dip his feet, but there are not any large pools to swim in. The trail is not highly trafficked, giving you an opportunity to have large sections of trail to yourself and your dog. The few people I did see along the way did have dogs though, just a warning if your dog is overly aggressive. The trail is relatively narrow, so be prepared to do some back-tracking to allow people to pass if necessary (remember that people travelling up the trail have the right-of-way). If your dog pulls or has the tendency to chase squirrels, be very careful because you could get pulled over the edge of the trail and down a large hill. Overall, Bear Canyon provides a nice little challenge for you and your dog if you are looking for a relatively short and quick day hike.
Let's take a look at if and how it works.
Description
From the Premier Website:

The Easy Walk Harness is designed to gently discourage your dog from pulling while walking on a leash.

Traditional harnesses can actually encourage dogs to pull harder because of the “opposition reflex.” That’s the reflex that makes sled dogs do what they do. The Easy Walk Harness' unique front-chest leash attachment stops pulling by tightening slightly across your dog's chest and shoulder blades. The gentle pressure steers your dog to the side and redirecting his attention back towards you. The Easy Walk Harness never causes coughing, gagging, or choking because the chest strap rests low across the breastbone, not on the delicate tracheal area.

Does it Work?
Does the Easy Walk Harness live up to it's promises? If you view the pictures above, you will notice the leash attachment is on a loop that is attached to the harness. As your dog pulls, the loop naturally compresses the harness at the dogs shoulders. My Schnauzer/Terrier mix digs in and pulls with every ounce of his 38 pound frame. He is surprisingly strong for a medium sized dog. As he pulls, the harness compresses his shoulder blades and at first he would look back and eventually return to my side. Every time he would try and pull, he would retreat after the harness compressed his chest and shoulder blades. After a few long walks, he started to get used to the compression and run ahead a little. Even when he powers through the harness, the walker will not feel the same pressure as a traditional collar. I never feel a strong tug on the leash with the Easy Walk. So I would say it works.
So the Easy Walk does it's job, but is it perfect? Well to be honest, no. I have a couple problems with the product. If you notice the product, the adjustment points are made from a chromed metal. The surface is smooth, and the nylon harness tends to loosen as my dog pulls. This happens mostly on the chest adjustments that are attached to the leash attachment. As our walks progress the chest strap becomes noticeably looser the longer we walk. When this happens, the harness loses it's ability to compress the shoulder blades and it leads to more leash pulling. This could be solved by using a material that does not allow the nylon harness to slip through the adjustment loops, but as it stands it causes some problems.
I believe this next problem is more of an isolated incident with just my dog. On long hikes, the nylon and plastic buckles behind the legs cause hot spots on the back of my dogs legs. One reason I think this happens is because my dog has really sensitve skin on his underside with a relatively small amount of fur. This means the harness is rubbing more on skin than fur like an average dog. Also, I feel like my dog would keep walking if he had a broken leg, he just seems to have a high tolerance for pain so he will keep pulling even if it hurts. So I don't think this will effect other dogs, but it happened with Hunter so I thought I should include it to give people a heads up. Now, he seems to be scared of the harnesss. I don't think he likes his lost freedom and he will back away when he sees it. I thought about fashioning some sort of soft cover for the buckle and rough nylon to protect his sensitive skin because it's a shame that the product works so well but causes hot spots.
Overall, the product works. It can be had for under $20 so I feel it is a good value. The product is well designed minus some minor gripes I had. I really like how it will take pressure of the dogs neck and puts pressure on some safer spots on the body. If your dog has a lot of problems with leash pulling and you are afraid you are putting too much pressure on their neck, this may be the product for you. At under $20 this product is definitely worth a try.

PROS +
It works, it definitely neutralized leash pulling
Simple to fit and use
Price, much more reasonably priced compared to other training systems
Takes pressure off your dog's neck
CONS -
It may cause hot spots
The adjustment points loosen on long walks

BOTTOM LINE
At the end of the day it does it's job. It may have imperfections, but if your dog has a problem with leash pulling, the Easy Walk Harness from Premier may be the answer to your problems.
Ice House Canyon is located just North of Mt. Baldy Village in the San Gabriel Mountains. It's a beautiful canyon hike with plenty to see and do. This hike is a launching pad to many other challenging hikes to the surrounding peaks such as Ontario Peak and the Three T's among others. Today we will take a look at hiking to Ice House Saddle.

This hike is great because you don't have to even make it to the saddle to have a good experience, though making it to the saddle is a great achievement. A trip to the Cucamonga Wilderness Boundary will still give you plenty of views in 1.8 miles. If you plan to travel to the saddle then this hike is somewhere past moderate difficulty probably more toward the strenuous side of the scale. The switchbacks up to the saddle can give you some trouble if you are not prepared. The elevation gain is over 2500 feet in 3.6 miles so that will give you an idea of what to expect.

Snow relatively low and early on the trail may be a sign of impassable switchbacks.

I would place the recommended time of year for this hike from Spring into Fall before the first snow of the season. If you encounter snow early in the trip, that may mean that there will be some impassable switchbacks later in the hike. This year we haven't had enough snowfall to make the trail dangerous. In typical years the snow will be much deeper and since many of the switchbacks are under the shade of larger conifers the snow won't fully melt. This leads to thick ice on the trail that would be a hazard to you and your furry friend. The good news is that even if you encounter snow, there is still plenty to do without making it to the saddle. Always make sure that you check the weather and trail conditions before you embark on your journey. This is a canyon, so you may also need to be prepared for high winds.

One of the cabins that didn't survive the canyon disasters

Here is some historical context for Ice House Canyon. According to Author/Historian John W. Robinson in his book Trails of the Angeles, the Ice House Canyon name dates back to the 1860s when the canyon supplied ice to the residents of the valley. Before that, Ice House Canyon was known as Cedar Canyon because it is said that the canyon provided the cedar beams for Mission San Gabriel (1771).

In the early 1900s the Forest Service began issuing leases for cabin sites in the National Forest and by 1938 there were over 100 privately owned cabins in the canyon. But the Los Angeles Flood of 1938 changed the landscape of the canyon forever. Two storms blasted the Los Angeles basin with over 9 inches of rain. The heavy rains and melted snow destroyed all but 35 cabins in the canyon. This explains the large number of destroyed cabins.

Another interesting fact is the large concrete foundation that you will encounter in the parking lot left of the trail head was once home to Ice House Canyon lodge.

So what does the pup think? This trail give your dog plenty to see and smell. You can take time and play in the creek if your dog enjoys water. It may not be deep enough to swim but they can still go for a dip. If it's early spring then your dog can play in some snow. The switchbacks at the end will present your dog a nice challenge and get them the exercise that they want, enjoy and need. There are a couple notes. If your pup is dog aggressive or doesn't enjoy the company of strangers, then you may want to avoid weekends. You will encounter a fair amount of other dogs on your trip and probably hundreds of people. The good news is that on weekdays it is much less traveled, but don't expect to have the whole trail to yourself, this is a popular hike. All in all, the pup will love the sights and sounds of Ice House Canyon.
On your way up the mountain, at the beginning of the switchbacks, keep an eye out for columbine spring. It will be on the right side. There is a small spur trail where you can take a seat and rest. If you have your water purifier, you can filter some water too. If you are early in the season, there may be snow on the trail. The snow on the trail seems to melt from travel and freeze at nights so beware of icy conditions. Take your time and watch your step. It may be good idea to invest in some chains for your shoes if you plan on hiking in ice a lot.

Once you begin the switchbacks, you will lose some tree cover and be exposed to some direct sunlight. Take that into consideration.
